Toddler Art!

It’s the process of creating, not the product!

Thursday’s are the messiest days at The Children’s Museum of Memphis! This is because every Thursday at 10am is Tot Art! Tot Art is a time for parents and toddlers to get down to the basics of art. And the basics are usually messy!

During Tot Art, kids get to experiment. This past week we experimented with textures! We mixed finger paints with different elements. The red finger paint was mixed with bird seed while the blue finger paint was mixed with glitter. The final color purple was mixed with shaving cream. The toddlers really got into the painting, some picking their favorite colors other picking their favorite textures.

Coming up with the idea’s is also an experiment in CMOM’s Programs office! No doubt you’ll find different types of arts and crafts at any giving time; many in the experimental phase. A lot goes into developing process based projects for toddlers. Luckily our office is a haven for creativity!

A great idea may not translate into a fun creative project for our youngest visitors. When creating our Tot Art projects, we aim to introduce our visitors to new mediums. We also want to do stuff that our parents are too scared to try at home!

Tot Art is EVERY Thursday at 10am at The Children's Museum of Memphis!

What's your favorite children's book quote?

Lately, we've been putting quotes from children's books on the dry erase board that lists our daily programs. One of my favorites is from The Cat in the Hat Comes Back:

When our mother went
Down to the town for the day,
She said, "Somebody has to
Clean all this away.
Somebody, SOMEBODY
Has to, you see."
Then she picked out two Somebodies.
Sally and me.

We're off to see the Wizard!!! This Saturday!

This Saturday will be the grand opening of our newest exhibit! The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! We know you have seen the characters floating around the museum lately, and now it is time for you to experience the books first hand!

Follow the yellow brick road and step into the pages of the book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," with the artwork of W.W. Denslow, at The Children's Museum of Memphis January 15-June 12, 2011. Perfect for children and adults of any age, visitors feel like they're walking through a storybook as they learn about science, art and history against the backdrop of the first American fairy tale.

We are excited to share this exhibit with you and hope to see you on Saturday, January
15th!
The exhibit is included with museum admission. For more information, visit CMOM.COM.
